||Guru Govind dou khade, kake lagoon paay,
Balihari Guru aapno, Govind diyo batay||

– Saint Kabir

Meaning : When Saint Kabir stands in front of God and his Guru i.e. his teacher he finds himself in a dilemma, “Whose feet to touch first?” and then he decides to bow down in front of his teacher who enlightened him on the existence of God.

In India the significance of teachers has been mentioned in many holy scriptures and ancient texts. The role of a teacher in an individual’s life is beyond any sort of description and explanation. India has been blessed with world famous teachers like Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Savitribai Phule, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Swami Vivekananda, etc. All the great personalities have mentioned about the role of their teachers in their respective lives and when it comes to Indian culture we are accustomed to examples like Sudha Murthy Madam. The Padma Shri awardee social worker and writer bent down in front of the entire audience during the candle lighting ceremony to touch the feet of her teacher. Her humble gesture has explicitly proved to us that no matter what a teacher shall always be venerated.

Unfortunately things are changing now and the online classes during the lockdown caused by the corona virus pandemic has presented a very grim reality in front of us. On one side we encountered teachers who tried to put in all efforts to learn and get accustomed to the gadgets and apps while on the other side we encountered students who mocked and bullied teachers. Teachers tried really hard to get used to the new system of teaching in fact there were many teachers who were not at all comfortable with the smartphones and web camera but for the sake of their students they decided to walk out of their comfort zones. Their endeavour to teach their students amidst the chaos of pandemic is laudable.

Do not forget that these teachers too have family, the novel corona virus and its associated fear is equivalent even for these teachers, some of these teachers have children or ageing parents at their home and they had to take extra care of them during the lockdown, some of the teachers were not at all used to laptops and smart phones and the most important thing is that teachers too are human beings they too feel anxious and uneasiness. Some of them are really old enough to mold themselves in an anxious state rather it is really unpleasant to expect an old teacher to be well aware of the new technology. Despite all this teachers were staunch supporters of online education because they never wanted to compromise with the education of their children. No wonder they are the real “Superheroes”.

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.

– Henry B. Adams

On the other hand the students were seen mocking teachers during the online class. Some were ridiculed to an extent that they started crying in front of such stupid students and their video got viral. Students got into the online classrooms with erroneous names and they played vulgar music during the online class. Some teachers were called names and were bullied for not knowing much about the technology. The knowledge of these teachers is unquestionable and it is okay if their technical skill is not that okay.

Things did not stop here, students recorded the sessions where they mocked and insulted their teachers and uploaded it over various social media platforms. Things got worst when these videos were considered to be “funny videos”. Instead of writing and emphasizing on the role of teachers or essay about teachers these students indulged themselves in creating teacher and student jokes. I wonder where did all the “mental health awareness” campaign went. Insulting teachers is normal? Teachers don’t feel anything? Is it normal to bully a teacher who is trying to learn the technology to teach his/her disciple?

We fail as a society because today our teachers are highly overlooked! Of course even today there are students who respect their teachers but it is a fact that the number of such students is dwindling. There is no point of development where a teacher is not respected. Check around yourself if you are a part of this “chaotic nuisance” in any form then pull yourself out of this. If you have siblings who are involved in this, make sure they stop doing this, if your children indulge themselves in doing these things make sure they never repeat this again. You and me together make the society and together we can bring the change. And the teachers who are reading this, you all are really inspiring more power to you!!!

Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids to work together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important.
